Historic Pittston Farm Is...
An ATV Destination in the North Woods!
ATV's are now welcomed at Historic Pittston Farm!
It is has a long time comming. But, I believe everyone will agree the wait was worth it. We have a great ATV trail. It was late in the season last year July 30th, that the first ATV's rolled into our driveway. What a joy it was to see them.
This was the result of much work by many people to get the ATV trail here. The project was started several years ago by State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Recreation. Let's explain a little further. Historic Pittston owns 44 acres. The 44,000 acres surrounding us is owned by all citizens of the state of Maine, and is called the "Seboomook Unit", public reserve land purchased by referumdem in 2003 for the purpose of conducting "recreation". One of those recreation activities recommended was ATV riding. However, it has taken from then until July 30th, 2009 to make this activity possible in this beautiful remote part of our state. The Seboomook Unit was inside the area known as the North Maine Woods, and they are the "Gatekeepers" for millions of acres in this northern part of Maine. This created a problem for the State of Maine and Us as a business. The problem: No ATV's were allowed in the North Maine Woods. The gate's location was a barrier for people wanting to enjoy this activity on their own land being the Seboomook Unit and an impedment for us as well to operate our business without impiedments. So....negotations took place and on July 29th, 2009 the North Maine Woods gate was moved! The gate is now about 800 feet beyond our entrance. It is located just past the South Branch of the Penobscot River Bridge, on the left side of the road where the Forest Station was located. This is great news for the "Seboomook Unit" for recreational purposes and us also as a business. People are no longer charged any gate fees, or otherwise stopped to enjoy this portion of the Seboomook Unit or to come to us for any services, including food and lodging.
As you can imagine, we as owners and staff are extremely excited about this development for the future of this area and our business.
The day after the gate moved, ATVs started coming and enjoying our food, lodging and hospitality. The newly developed multi-use trail in the Seboomook Unit was extended about 8 miles beyond the original ATV trail coming from Jackman. Now, not only ATV riders, but mountain bikes, horses and hikers, can use this trail. The State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Recreation, Off-Road Recreation Division are the people responsible for building the new trail to us. They have done a great job. This year the trail will be maintained by our recreation club. Improvements will be made in the difficult areas of terrian and other aspects of the trail improved where needed to make for an enjoyable ride to Historic Pittston Farm.
The new trail is a combination of old logging roads and direct wilderness ATV trail, allowing for a varied terrian of riding. The main trail comes from Jackman, ME and the distance is 48.8 miles from there to our premises. People can also connect onto the trail from Rockwood & Greenville, and as far away as Abbot to get to us. I'd refer you to the 2010 Maine State ATV map (2.2MB pdf file). Look at #111 to find us. We are the Northern most point or destination in Somerset County, for ATV riding. Currently we are the last stop on the trail. All the provisions you need are here, including gasoline, great home-cooking, and comfortable lodging and did I forget excellent Native Brook Trout Fishing?.
It is our hope you will consider us for a "Mini Vacation". We suggest you bring your ATV (Don't forget to put your fishing poles in).
